London Adviser recognised for dedicated work in HMP Brixton

In September, Sonia Hines, a National Careers Service Adviser at HMP Brixton, was recognised for her hard work and dedication by the Prisoner Learning Alliance. Sonia received a nomination for a prestigious Prisoner Learning Alliance Award as an Outstanding Individual.

The awards recognise those who go the extra mile to promote and encourage learning in prison. All nominations are made by prisoners themselves. The customer who nominated Sonia wrote: “If it wasn’t for Sonia I would not be half way through a counselling skills course now. I would not know the career path I want to follow the way I do now, or the qualifications I need to achieve this goal.”

Paulette Howard, the National Careers Service Lead for In Custody in London, comments: “Well done Sonia! I’m really pleased to see that Sonia’s huge effort in supporting learners to access distance learning has been recognised. It can be frustrating sometimes but the work done by our advisers working in prisons is greatly appreciated by our customers and the agencies we work with. It is particularly gratifying to know one of Sonia’s customers has nominated her for the award.”
