National Trust axes 1,300 jobs as it battles the financial impact of coronavirus

The National Trust has announced almost 1,300 job losses, as it battles the financial impact of coronavirus.

The organisation, which first warned of cuts in July, has confirmed 514 compulsory and 782 voluntary redundancies.

It said the latest round of cost cutting will save the organisation £59million a year.

A further £41million will be saved in areas such as travel, office costs and marketing as it shifts to digital communications.

The coronavirus crisis has hit almost every aspect of income for Trust, which has 5.6million members across the UK.

In March, it was forced to shut all of its houses, gardens, car parks, shops, cafés and events.

Today's figures are in addition to 162 people who were placed on consultation after £124million of projects were halted at the start of the pandemic.

It takes the total number of redundancies to 1,458.
