Refugee to Recruited
National Careers Service London Case Study
Haider is a 30-year-old Bedouin refugee from Kuwait who had never had the opportunity to get an education. He first met with the National Careers Service after arriving in London with no English skills.
Haider had very little confidence and motivation; he felt very lost and didn’t know how to communicate with the people around him. When he arrived for his first session with the National Careers Service, he felt that his Adviser was professional and efficient although he couldn’t communicate with them. The Adviser sought help from a colleague who spoke Arabic so they could support Haider.
Haider was advised to learn English as a matter of urgency and was immediately enrolled on an ESOL course to help him to integrate better. The Adviser supported Haider to do this as he didn’t have IT skills – Haider was also encouraged to learn some computer skills to help his career prospects.
After enrolling on the ESOL course, Haider completed Pre-Entry Level English and progressed to Entry Level 1 in just 3 months and gained his very first certificated qualification. He then went on to pass his Entry Level 2 exam and found work, enabling him to sign off from the jobcentre.
As a result of meeting with the National Careers Service, Haider said:
“I am very proud of my achievements. I cannot thank enough the Service and everyone involved who guided and supported me.”
“I am very clear and focused on my future plans and goals. Without this, I would be completely lost and perhaps still be signing on at the jobcentre.”
“This has given me confidence and hope - amazing one to one personalised support. I am sure this is just the beginning of a bright future.”
