German discounter Aldi is set to open 100 new stores, creating 4,000 jobs over the next 12 months. The chain said it's part of a £1.3billion two-year pledge that will also see its click & collect trial expanded across the UK.The move will bring 100 more outlets to Britain's streets, with a further 100 to be refurbished alongside a new revamp. It comes as ministers remain in talks over a potential second-wave lockdown that could close the high street for at least a fortnight.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said sales have rocketed 8.3% since January as he thanked staff for their "heroic" work during the pandemic.
